In addition, 102 medicinal plants representing 44 species are cultivated in pots and displayed across the campus. Each plant is accompanied by a name board presenting its scientific name, family, and regional (Malayalam) name, along with its main therapeutic indications. To further promote awareness and foster a cultural connection with nature, 27 Nakshatra Vrikshas (trees associated with the lunar constellations) are also displayed within the campus, linking traditional beliefs with botanical and Ayurvedic knowledge.
This initiative aims to create awareness among students, visitors, and the public about the identification and medicinal value of common herbal plants.

(Under Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences,
Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India)
About the Drug Standardization Unit
The Drug Standardization Unit (DSU)/ Department of Quality Control Laboratory at the National Ayurveda Research Institute for Panchakarma (NARIP), Cheruthuruthy, was established in 2010 with the vision of ensuring scientific validation and quality assurance of Ayurvedic medicines. Initially functioning under one Assistant Director, the unit expanded under various CCRAS-funded projects with the recruitment of Senior Research Fellows and contractual technical staff.
Presently, the unit comprises a team of members, including Research Officers, Research Assistants (Chemistry), Laboratory Technicians, and a Lab Attendant. The team is engaged in standardization, authentication, and quality control of single and compound Ayurvedic drugs through modern analytical approaches.
Infrastructure and Instrumentation
The Drug Standardization Unit (DSU)/ Department of Quality Control Laboratory is well-equipped with state-of-the-art analytical and phytochemical instrumentation, enabling comprehensive evaluation and standardization of Ayurvedic formulations in accordance with the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (API) and International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) guidelines.
The laboratory achieved National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 in the year 2026 for chemical testing of physicochemical parameters.
The scope of accreditation includes:
- Loss on Drying
- Total Ash
- Acid-Insoluble Ash
- Alcohol-Soluble Extractive
- Water-Soluble Extractive
- pH (10% Aqueous Solution)
- Uniformity of Weight
These parameters are evaluated as per API standards for Single Drugs/Medicinal Plants and their parts, as well as classical Ayurvedic dosage forms such as Kwatha Churnam, Churnam, Vati, and Gulika.
The laboratory is equipped with essential basic and select sophisticated instruments to perform physicochemical and physical testing parameters required for quality control and standardization of Ayurvedic formulations in compliance with API specifications.
