  1. Ayurveda Mobile Health Care Programme under the Scheduled Castes Sub-Plan

(AMHCP-SCSP)

The Ayurveda Mobile Health Care Programme under the Scheduled Castes Sub-Plan was initiated in October 2015 at the National Ayurveda Research Institute for Panchakarma, Cheruthuruthy, under the guidance of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), New Delhi.

The programme aims to improve the health and well-being of Scheduled Caste communities, who continue to face various health challenges. From October 2015 to March 2025, the institute’s mobile healthcare team covered 52 villages, conducting 1,914 visits and reaching a total population of 64,498 people, of whom 58,913 belonged to Scheduled Castes.

During this period, 60,517 individuals received Ayurveda-based healthcare services, including 48,866 from the Scheduled Caste community (covering both new and follow-up cases).

For the year 2025–2026, the institute is conducting research on the topic:

“Documentation of Ethno-Dietary Practices Indigenous to India and Documentation of plants, metals, minerals, animal products and other materials used in various indigenous religious practices and rituals across India.”

This first study has been taken with an objective to document the indigenous ethno-dietary practices in diverse geographical areas, different ethnic groups, and communities across India which will contribute to preservation and promotion of traditional dietary practices. And the second study has been taken with an objective to document the plants, metals, minerals, animal products and other materials used in indigenous religious practices and rituals in diverse geographical areas and communities across India which will contribute to preservation and promotion of religious practices and rituals. Under this initiative, the institute will cover 20 blocks across 5 districts to document and preserve India’s rich traditional knowledge and cultural heritage.

2. General health screening with special focus on selected disease conditions (Tuberculosis, Anemia, Sickle cell disease & Malnutrition) and Ayurveda management of Anemia and Malnutrition in students of Ekalavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS).

The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of a collaborative clinical research project aimed at improving the general wellness of tribal student populations studying in Ekalavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) across the country. The primary objective of the project is to screen students in the allotted EMRS by a joint team of CCRAS and ICMR personnel, with a specific focus on four selected conditions: Tuberculosis, Sickle Cell Disease, Anemia, and Malnutrition. As part of the broader initiative, detected cases of anemia and malnutrition are being addressed through Ayurvedic interventions. The project is currently being implemented in 57 EMRS across India, under the coordination of 16 CCRAS research institutes. Initial health screenings were conducted by ICMR teams, followed by blood analysis of students identified with moderate malnutrition, who were subsequently enrolled for Ayurvedic management. At present, NARIP Cheruthuruthy is monitoring 19 students (11 boys and 8 girls) enrolled in the Moderate Malnutrition arm of the project. The intervention is planned for a duration of six months, and the enrolled participants are actively continuing their treatment. In addition, CCRAS institutes engaged in this project are managing anemia through Ayurvedic modalities and promoting lifestyle modifications based on Ayurvedic principles to improve the overall quality of life among students.
